ICONIC Zimbabwe Hotel-Meikles– is to change hands this Sunday as a Dubai-based Albwardy Investments take control after buying the hotel for US $20 million.
Expectations from travellers and tourists are high as the hotel awaits to receive the much needed facelift that ensures it maintain its five star status. Albwardy Investments will spend US$30 million in face-lifting the 312-room hotel.
Meikles Limited started operating in Zimbabwe, then Rhodesia, in 1892.
According to the company website, “For over 100 years Meikles has been acclaimed as Zimbabwe’s premier luxury five-star hotel with gracious charm and silver-service. Situated in the heart of the capital city Harare, Meikles is a legendary meeting place for international business executives, dignitaries, leisure travellers and celebrities.”
In a statement released by Meikles Limited- its company secretary Thabani Mpofu said “The directors wish to advise shareholders that the requisite terms of regularising the control of the Meikles Hotel to the buyer per the sale and purchase agreements have been met. The buyer will take effective control of Meikles Hotel on 1 March 2020.”
